SONY 2x2 On-Chip Lens Image Sensor Technology 2020-01-08

SONG announces the 2x2 On-Chip Lens (OCL) solution. It is a new image sensor technology to realize quick focus, high
definition and high sensitivity. Compared to past technologies where sensitivity deviation of individual pixels in on-chip lens
running across 4 pixels is a serious problem, SONY has successfully developed this new image sensor by optimizing the
hardware structure and introducing a new signal processing technology. 

Each pixel on the image sensor is called the light-gathering lens of OCL. Traditionally, each pixel is equipped with an
individual OCL. In the 2x2 OCL design, four neighboring pixels with the same color share the same OCL. Compared
to the traditional design, this brand-new structure is characterized by:
.Full-pixel phase difference detection.
.Enhanced phase difference detection (focus function).

Full-pixel phase difference detection
While no full-pixel phase difference detection is used in traditional technologies, phase difference is detected with only
a small part of pixels. The 2x2 OCL detects phase difference with all pixels to achieve precision focus of smaller targets.

.Focus function in low luminance
Stabilizing focus in low luminance requires computing information acquired from detection of the phase difference of
many pixels to remove noise. With full-pixel phase difference detection, the 2x2 OCL can provide more information
for computing to enhance focus.

.Focus not by the shape or texture of targets
Traditionally, the phase difference of pixels is detected after pixel splitting (left and right, L/R). Therefore, detection of
targets without horizontal texture changes will be less effective (e.g. targets with horizontal edges)

By using the same lens for many pixels, SONY optimizes the low luminance and focus precision performance of cameras
with the 2x2 OCL for customers to develop products to a brander extent.
