Sony is continuing to release ultra-small, high-definition color Micro-OLED displays. Sony’s M-OLED products not only boast the native advantages of OLED but also Sony’s proprietary add-on technologies that provide the customer’s users with a highly immersive experience. The product is mainly used in the electronic view finders (EVF) of still and motion cameras, as well as augmented reality (AR) applications. High brightness, extended OLED service life, and low power consumption are key technologies in the AR field. To meet these requirements, Sony’s proprietary technology for forming micro-lens within the pixel improved light-emission efficiency by 220% compared to conventional technologies. Beams that pass through the micro-lens become more parallel, reducing interference between color filters and expanding the viewing angle.

Sony M-OLED Technology Features:

Micro-lens technology improves light emission efficiency by placing the micro-lens on the On-Chip Color Filter (OCCF) within the pixel. Light emission from the OLED’s illumination layer towards the front is 220% greater than the conventional arrangement. In principle, AR goggles and other applications requiring high brightness prefer to emit rays in a more parallel manner making this trait very desirable. Additionally, the technology will help reduce power consumption and extend service life for applications where high brightness isn’t critical.

Wider Viewing angle through micro-lens technology:
Rays emitted by the micro-lens are more parallel so peak value can be achieved on the front side. This is a big advantage for polarizing and wave guide optical systems such as AR goggles. Another benefit is the minimization of mutual interference between neighboring color filters that improve the viewing angle as shown below. Deviations in the tri-stimuli values remain small even when viewed at an angle and this helps to counter color shift.

1000% improvement in maximum brightness:

In addition to the introduction of micro-lens technology to improve brightness, Sony is also adopting other strategies to improve emission efficiency over several stages as shown below. Further improvements in brightness will be introduced to expand the potential applications of OLED Microdisplay products.
